The one movie this fall that will put a smile on your face. New from acclaimed director Mike Leigh (Topsy-Turvy, Vera Drake), is a comedy about irrepressibly cheerful Poppy. Oh, she’s exasperating all right. All of that optimism drives everyone around 30-year-old Poppy (Sally Hawkins) crazy, but the endlessly energetic and effervescent North London schoolteacher really does face challenges of her own, from an angry driving instructor and various encounters – with a homeless man and her pregnant sister – to a love affair with one of her student’s social workers. Witness to all of this is best friend and flatmate Zoe (Alexis Zegerman), the one constant in the chaotic life of Leigh’s loveable heroine.

EVENT – DOWNTOWN ART & GALLERY WALK (FREE EVENT)

Join The State and dozens of other art galleries, shops and restaurants for this monthly, free event. The Downtown Art & Gallery Walk -- which falls on the third Thursday of every month --  features the works of local sculptors, photographers, painters and artists working in various mediums whose art is both on display and for sale. First, start by picking up an Art Walk map at any one of several downtown locations, and then let it guide you to the many participating venues and merchants. This month at The State, enjoy refreshments while listening to our guest musician Jen Eros. Artists whose work will be on display at The State this month include: Mario Fernandez, Jim Christiansen, Sandy Lynn, Jodie LaDouca, Jessica Holt and Steve Brewer.

EVENT – EDGAR WINTER IN CONCERT

Join The State for an evening with keyboard player, vocalist, saxophonist and percussionist Edgar Winter. The legendary rock, blues and jazz artist -- a State favorite -- has more than 20 albums to his credit, from his seminal Edgar Winter’s White Trash and They Only Come Out At Night to Shock Treatment and Not A Kid Anymore.
