Join The State and dozens of other art galleries, shops and restaurants for this monthly, free event.  The Downtown Art & Gallery Walk -- which falls on the third Thursday of every month --  features the works of local sculptors, photographers, painters and artists working in various mediums whose art is both on display and for sale. First, start by picking up an Art Walk map at any one of several downtown locations, and then let it guide you to the many participating venues and merchants. This month at The State, enjoy refreshments while listening to our guest musician Syd Hilterman, aka 25 Cent Elvis. Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 from 5 to 9 p.m.

FILM—RELIGULOUS (R) 101 Min.

Do you smell something burning?  In this documentary, Bill Maher, star of the HBO show “Real Time,” travels around the country meeting religious people and making fun of them. As S.F. Chronicle movie reviewer Mick LaSalle wrote, “(Maher) makes Michael Moore look incredibly likeable in comparison.” Of Maher, he says, “He’s smug. He’s arrogant. He doesn’t listen. He’s full of wisecracks, rides around in a nice car and acts as if everybody he meets is a complete idiot.” In light of Maher’s single-minded purpose, what is there to recommend this film? It’s still a provocative look at all forms of religion, not just fundamentalism, giving Maher the platform to advance his theory that all religions are a danger to the survival of civilization. If the film accomplishes the goal of getting people to think about religion in real-world terms, then it has accomplished its goal -- even if it does so by dredging for the lowest common denominator.

EVENT -- FEED THE ANIMALS STAND-UP COMEDY FRENZY

The State's putting together a comedy jam, one comic at a time, starting with Johnny Steele, a stand-up  whose act is peppered with opinions. Following in the footsteps of the legendary satirist Lenny Bruce, Steele riffs on what outrages him the most, from greed and materialism to hypocrisy. A headliner in Bay Area clubs, Steele is the host of "Live 105," his own morning radio show, a daily TV talk show that S.F. Weekly's annual readers' poll and the S.F. Publicity Club picked as the city's best. Steele has perfected his act through numerous comedy competitions and appearances at the nation's top clubs. Now a seasoned vet, Steele is quick to point out drinking for free remains his favorite part of stand-up. Check him out at www.johnnysteele.com.
